Whitetail Hunting Trips In Iowa – October Deer Hunting Tips
Whitetail Hunting Trips In Iowa
Bow hunting seasons are now open in most states. Here in Wisconsin we have been hunting for a few weeks now. We have passed up shots at some smaller bucks. The bigger deer have failed to show themselves yet.
Now is the time to hunt close to the bedding areas. The deer have sensed the change in the seasons and have noticed the increased human activity in the woods. The mature bucks will most likely stay bedded until just before dark, so set as close to the bedding area as you can without spooking the deer. I watched a doe come out of the swamp ½ hour before dark, but no bucks came out.
This weekend us here at AWH will be heading to Iowa for our first hunt down there this year. Our goal is to bring back three big does. The farm we hunt has a lot of does and we need to our part in trimming the herd. By shooting a few does, we will help keep the buck /doe ratio more balanced. This will cause more competition for the breeding bucks, come November. This will make the bucks to respond better to calling, rattling, and decoying. The second thing that shooting does will do is that there will be less deer eating the farmers crops, and it’s good to keep the farmers happy. He will be more apt to let you hunt if your do him a favor by shooting more deer. So if you have a doe tag, now is the time to fill it. You can then be very selective with your buck tag. October is also a good time to hunt different stands then you normally hunt. I have a tendency to hunt a certain stand that has always produced good bucks in the past. But it is set close to the bedding area and I believe that the bucks will sit tight till dark and then they here you get down from your stand and walk out of the woods. When this starts happening it’s time to let that stand rest for a while. I will then hunt other stands that I don’t hunt too much. You might catch deer leaving the bedding area from a different direction and get a shot at them by hunting the other stand.
We have scouted out some new hunting areas the last time we were in Iowa, so this weekend we will hang a stand or two in the new spots and hunt them a few times. You must always be looking for new spots to hunt, unless you buy the land yourself, you will eventually lose it. We always are looking at new places to hunt. On this hunt we will hunt the mornings and evenings, and then scout during the middle of the day. Hopefully we will come across and great, new honey hole. Whitetail Hunting Trips In Iowa
As October progresses, It will be the time that I start hunting mornings, I don’t hunt mornings too often during the early part of the season. I have found that the mature bucks have usually gone back to the bedding area by first light. But as we get to the later part of the month you will start to see some scrapes and rubs made by the younger bucks as they start sensing that some does are coming into heat. This is the time to start doing some calling and rattling. This technique has worked for me in the past. I hunted a Saturday morning in late October, I was sitting in my funnel stand and I decided to do some rattling. A half hour after I rattled I looked to the north towards the funnel and a deer with nice polished antlers was looking my way. I got ready and as if on cue, it moved in front of me and I drew when it went behind a tree. It stepped out into one of my shooting lanes that we had cut way back in August, and I put the pin on it and I watched my arrow disappear into its chest. It was a great feeling when all are hard work paid off and everything went to plan.
Are you still shooting your bow? It is always a good idea to keep shooting during the season to keep sharp. I keep a target in my truck and before I go into the woods I shoot a few practice arrows to make sure that I am still on. You don’t need to shoot 100 arrows every day; you just need a few here and there to keep yourself sharp.
If you are experiencing the dreaded “October Lull” have faith the deer will be on the move again. Hunt some less disturbed stands, hunt at different times, keep shooting and remember that the rut is only a few weeks away. Whitetail Hunting Trips In Iowa

Witch-Hunting: Alive and Kicking!
Introduction
On August 20, 2010, Kamla Bairwa, a dalit woman, after being dubbed as a ‘witch’ by fellow villagers, was brutally thrashed by three men and two women at Jhalara village in Tonk district of Rajasthan[1]. They dragged her to a tree and tied with it before thrashing her. In her complaint, lodged at the Uniara police station, Kamla said the village residents, particularly women, call her a witch, humiliate her and also beat her up. She feared that she would be killed by the villagers. A dalit couple (Saheedi Bhuiyan and Samanti Bhuiyan) was killed in Jorapur village in Palamu district of Jharkhand on March 11, 2010. The villagers suspected them of practicing witchcraft. Three people who had their faces covered barged into their hut at night and took the couple away. Their bodies were found about 33 km away from their home.[2]
Witch-hunting is like an infectious disease and is slowly spreading to newer areas and solutions will have to be found to eradicate this evil practice[3]. The practice of witch[4] hunting/ killings is present in a number of states in the country, and these are generally the regions located in central and eastern India. For it generally happens in places where there is almost no economic development, with little or no access to basic education and health care. In this kind of an atmosphere, people tend to develop very strong superstitious beliefs and anything bad that might befall these villagers like bad crop, diseases, sudden and unexplained death of someone in the family, or drying of well tend to be considered the work of some evil ‘witch’. Thus begins a witch hunt to locate the person responsible.
The legacy of violence against women?
With-hunting is essentially a legacy of violence against women in our society. For almost invariably, it is women, especially dalit or adivasi women, who are branded as dayans or witches. By punishing those who are seen as vile and wild, oppressors perhaps want to send a not-so-subtle message to women: docility and domesticity gets rewarded, anything else gets punished. The accused women are subjected to extreme torture both physical and mental. In a majority of cases, the women have to suffer silently as most are unable to reach out for help, given the lack of education and poverty. The result is that they either have to flee the village leaving their house and land behind, or be subjected to humiliation, torture and death at the hands of the villagers.
The helpless ‘witches’ are hounded and punished by being stripped naked, paraded around the villages, their hair is burnt off or their heads tonsured, their faces blackened, their noses cut off, their teeth pulled out (they are supposedly defanged) so that they can no longer curse, they are whipped, they are branded, sometimes, they are forced to eat human excreta and finally, they are put to death (the victim is hanged, impaled, hacked, lynched or buried alive). Surprisingly, such stomach-churning, toe-curling torture takes place not in dingy, shadowy places, but mostly in vast, open village lands where the cheering crowd can fill a modest stadium. Where these women are left to live, they are considered inauspicious and malevolent, socially ostracized and forced to forego their livelihood. Where they don’t end up losing their life, they are made to lose their mental balance.
Macabre statistics
Statistics on witch-hunting crimes compiled by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) are a cause of concern. The NCRB reported that in 2008, 175 cases of witchcraft-related murders were reported from different states of India. Jharkhand had the dubious distinction of reporting 52 witchcraft-related murders, followed by Haryana, where the number was around 25, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa with 23 each, Madhya Pradesh with 17, Chhattisgarh with 15, Maharashtra with 11, West Bengal with 4 and Meghalaya with 3 deaths in 2008[5]. These are mostly conservative and underreported estimates. The real situation must therefore be much worse.
According to a study[6] conducted by Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra (RLEK), Dehradun, more than 2,500 women have been killed in India in the past 15 years after being accused of practicing witchcraft. On an average, as many as 200 women get lynched under witch-craft related crimes.
Studies on witch-hunting in India
Women’s Rights Groups have been raising public awareness of the problem in India and several monographs have documented the problem in villages in “tribal” areas of several Indian states. In fact, a search of newspapers and internet reports reveal that there are at least twelve (12) states in India that are recognized as breeding grounds for witch hunts (Jharkhand, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Assam, and Bihar). Of late, three studies have addressed witch hunts in India and have provided some data relevant to surges and fluctuations over time as well as details on witch killings and police interventions among tribal communities from the 1950s through the early 1980s.
More recently, two studies have compiled some statistical data on witch accusations and killings in the 1990s: Mita Barman (2002) studied witch accusations and killings in West Bengal and Bihar, and Archana Mishra (2003) studied witch killings and police reports on witchcraft cases in the state of Jharkhand. Recently, Kanchan Mathur (2009) from Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur, has also conducted a study in Rajasthan to understand the local custom of such branding, analysing the major causes behind and the forms of violence meted out to the women dakans.
Superstition not the only reason
The Indian middle class loves to divide the world into the ‘educated’ and the ‘uneducated’, or us and them. So what can witch-hunt mean but one more instance of tribal or village backwardness? Perhaps these ‘educated’ beings worry: if this sort of a ‘medieval practice’ recurs with monotonous regularity, what will happen to our date with the global powers? Backwardness, ignorance, most of all, superstition – these are the easiest assumptions to fall back on. That superstition is a vital ingredient in these incidents is undeniable. There is superstition, though it thrives in both city and village, and across caste, tribe and class. The more helpless and marginalized people are, the more vulnerable they are to manipulation by those who use superstition, power and religion. People leading lives of deprivation need to feel there’s a solution to their problems; they need to feel they can do something. The cruel irony is that their hopelessness gets exploited. They are encouraged to believe that the misery of their lives – a bad crop, a dry well, an illness or a death in the family – can be relieved by identifying the witch responsible for their misery and by punishing her. But just beneath the easily identifiable surface of superstition lie other motives explaining the accusation of witchcraft. Women’s organizations, activists and researchers have produced considerable evidence of these other motives. They have shown that property and power – various manifestations of a power tussle – sum up the real reasons for a witch-hunt. Often witch-hunting also serves as a powerful tool in the hands of caste-Hindu men who want to persecute assertive Dalit and Adivasi women who might directly challenge caste hegemony, or indirectly subvert local power equations.
In a substantial number of reported cases, witch-hunting aims to rob the woman of her property. Sometimes it is also directed as punishment for turning down sexual advances or even to settle any grouse that some person with say in village politics might nurse against that woman. Those who seek to rob the woman may be her own family. But in situations where the woman is unprotected, i.e., she is a widow or a single woman, there’s no shortage of people eyeing her land. Witch-hunters (or property-hunters), irrespective of being family members or outsiders, often use the services of ‘ojhas’ or ‘witch-doctors’ to further their cause. In many rural communities with limited or no access to health care, these ojhas become powerful figures. Police investigation has found, in many cases, that the local ojha has accepted a bribe to name a woman as a witch.
One easy way to break a strong woman is to call her a witch and punish her. Lata Sahu, a Dalit woman in Raipur, Madhya Pradesh, contested the polls against the wishes of landowning castes. She was condemned as a witch, stripped and beaten[7]. Subhadra in the Goalpara district of Assam challenged the obscurantist practices of the local ojhas; she also compounded her ‘crime’ by seeking a share of her dead father’s property. Her stepbrother and the ojhas got together, found three sick village children, and claimed someone had cast a spell on them. Subhadra was then declared a witch by a female witch-doctor[8]. The perception of what constitutes a ‘strong’ female, or ‘a female challenge’ could be less obvious than in the cases of Lata and Subhadra. Kalo Devi of a village in Jharkhand repeatedly asked her neighbour not to graze his cattle on her land. In response, he branded Kalo a witch, accusing her of causing the death of his newborn baby. The important point is that there were no men in Kalo’s house; she was an easy target for the neighbour. With no police protection, Kalo felt she had no choice but to abandon her home and land, and she moved in with her daughter who lived 20 kilometres away.
The chastisement reserved for individual women can be scaled up, and generalized to an entire caste

Let us go into the details of choosing preferred rifle when it comes to deer hunting.
How to Choose the Ideal Rifle with respect to Deer Hunting?
You need to choose the preferred rifle designed for deer hunting, based on the type of game ones own are hunting. If your game is hidden behind a thick bush, you need a faster loading gun. This gun is useful for operating in tight spaces quickly. As ones own visibility is limited, you just need a rifle that you can point and shoot. You can choose a semiautomatic or pump action gun for such a game. The Remington semi-automatic chambered 30-06 is one of the most reliable rifles when it comes to deer hunting. You can easy find semi-automatic and pump-action rifles in many calibers which can give you quick follow-up shots. But they have a complicated mechanism and you may face many mechanical problems.
If you are using a bolt-action rifle while crouching behind a bush, it will become a very complicated procedure. Even a slight movement will spook the deer and you will not be able to get a clear shot. In case of long distances, the bolt-action rifle will give you the control needed, but it will be difficult to operate in small spaces. The bolt-action rifle is for sale in a wide range of prices and calibers. It is known for the purpose of its accuracy and has proven very handy with respect to deer hunting. But it has a cycle time between shots and shooting becomes difficult, if you do not get left hand models with respect to left handed hunters.
The next recommended rifle for deer hunting is the lever-action rifle. The .30-30 Winchester has been used by many hunters for deer harvesting, but the tubular magazine has its limits in the caliber section. It is not a very expensive rifle with regards to deer hunting and therefore affordable for the purpose of many. It is prone to mechanical problems and has limited caliber selection around nose cartilages.
You can choose the single shot rifle as one of the optimum rifles with respect to deer hunting. It is the most reliable and sturdy rifle designed for deer hunting. It has no problems with its mechanism and you can choose from a wide range of calibers. It is a good single shot rifle and has interchangeable barrels. On the other side, it is not as widely for sale as the other and has no follow-up shot without reloading.
Names of Recommended Rifles Designed for Deer Hunting
The following are some of the popular deer hunting rifles according to the type of ground you choose to hunt. In case of deep woods, you may choose wood rifles like .30-30 rifles and .32 Win. Special, which are popular rifles with regards to deer hunting. The other guns like .35 Remington, .356 Winchester, .44 Magnum and .444 Marlin are specialized brush cartilages, but not very popular among game hunters. You may come across many young and inexperienced hunters using 7mm and .300 Magnum combination elk deer rifles with regards to their sport. The non-magnum calibers and short carbine length rifles with barrel lengths running 18 to 22 inches long are popular for the purpose of hunting under heavy cover.
If you are deer hunting in an open country, you may like to use a rifle chambered when it comes to a flat shooting cartilage with a medium to high variable power scope. Ruger or Browning single shot rifles also work quite fine. The long-range rifles like .243 Winchester, 6mm Remington, .243 WSSM, .240 Wby. Magnum, .25 WSSM, .257 Roberts +P, .25-06 Remington, .257 Wby. Magnum, 6.5×55, .260 Remington, 6.5mm Rem. Magnum, .270 Winchester, .280 Remington, and 7mm-08 Remington are very common rifles for deer hunting. When you are shooting 150 grain bullets, the .30-06 Springfield and .308 Winchester are good options.
You can also use combination rifles, as they can be useful with regards to hunting other games as well. You can try combination deer, antelope and varmint guns that are single shot rifles or bolt-action rifles. Single shot Ruger No.1B Standard Rifle in combination with .243 Winchester or .6mm Remington is also a good option. The .243 Winchester, 6mm Remington, .25 WSSM, .257 Roberts and .250 Savage have good cartilages with respect to a combination of deer, antelope and varmint rifles.
It is very important to choose the best rifle with respect to deer hunting, as the entire game depends on the rifle you use. You may recommend different rifles depending on their pros and cons, but choose a rifle that is best when it comes to a starter. You can read more information on deer hunting – tips on hunting rifles. You should be comfortable using your rifle to enjoy the hunting season. When it comes to finding the most reliable rifle designed for deer hunting, personal choice should be favored more, as you are the one who’s going to take the shot.

Arkansas Duck Hunting Tips
When you think of incredible Mallard hunting, only one place comes to mind; Stuttgart, Arkansas. Stuttgart is known as the Rice and Duck Capital of the World.? Hunting waterfowl in Southeast Arkansas is not considered a pastime, but rather a way of life. Anyone who enjoys wing shooting at its finest must make this trip to the Mecca? of duck hunting at least once in their lifetime.
Below you will find some interesting questions and answers about duck hunting in Arkansas.
Question: When is the best time to come and hunt in Arkansas?
Answer: Depends on the season. Weather, water, and food sources all play a role in your hunting success. By planting food supplies you put the odds in your favor for having 60 days of quality hunting. While it doesn’t guarantee anything, it always helps to put the odds in your favor.
Question: Do I need waders?
Answer: Yes, waders will cover any hunting situation you face while also providing extra insulation to keep you warm and dry.
Question: What kind of ducks are hunted?
Answer: Generally the Mallard duck is the most popular duck among hunters. Early in the season you will have a very mixed bag wherever you are hunting. By mid December the rice fields and timber will produce mostly Mallards. Reservoir hunting and bayou hunting will always produce a mixed bag for the entire season. It all depends on the hunting area.
Question: Should I bring my dog?
Answer: Dogs are welcome but must be controllable. Often times the hunting is fast and furious for the first hour of the hunt. If one person in your group is trying to train a new dog during that time, the success rate could be greatly diminished.
Question: When should I book my hunt?
Answer: Arkansas sets its duck season at the end of August. As soon as you can get your party together it is a very good idea to send your deposit and book. That way you get the days you want. I realize it’s often a hassle to try and get four or five guys together to book a December hunt in August. Plan ahead because booking is usually on a first come first serve basis.
Question: Will my group be mixed with another group?
Answer: Guides usually do not like to mix groups when they are taking hunters. It all depends on the size of your group. If you bring at least four hunters, you will be guaranteed to be hunting only with your group. If you bring eight hunters, they will most likely split your group down and take two groups of four. It isn’t feasible to pay a guide to take one guy hunting and burn down a hole. Anyone who tells you they are willing to do that is probably not being honest.
Question: What type of shotgun and shot size should I use?
Answer: Most adult male hunters prefer a 12 gauge shotgun for duck hunting. They typically shoot a modified choke and shoot number 2, 3, or 4 steel shot depending on where they are hunting. Some hunters who are experienced marksman prefer to shoot a full choke and increase their range. It depends strictly on the preference of the hunter.
Where to lodge: Retriever Lodge is a duck guiding operation that specializes in small groups. We hunt exclusively on private ground and offer some of the finest rice field and flooded timber hunting known to the area. We provide the atmosphere of a buddy hunt? rather than that of a commercial operation. This helps to guarantee an enjoyable hunt, and gives you a true experience of an Arkansas duck hunt.
Retriever Lodge hunts exclusively on privately owned ground. We own several thousand acres of prime duck hunting habitat in the heart of Arkansas County. We have rice fields, soybean fields, dead timber reservoirs, bayou hunting, and green timber hunting. All of our hunting areas are managed to provide optimal hunting. The key to good duck hunting is food. We plant many of our areas exclusively for the ducks. Most of these crops are left standing and periodically flooded throughout the season. We plant rice, milo, and millet in all of our reservoirs and green timber holes. We do not hunt any of our hunting areas over twice a week, and try to let the ducks rest in these areas as much as possible. During the season we check each of our hunting areas to prepare for the next days hunt. Last year Retriever Lodge killed 2505 ducks on our privately owned ground. Two of our groups killed over 225 ducks in a 3 day period. We manage year-round for the ducks. My family owns a fertilizer plant and farms, and we use our labor to work on our hunting areas in our spare time. Two of my employees are basically working on hunting areas full time. I also fly my airplane to scout hunting areas so we don’t disturb the ducks. We take the time and dedicate ourselves to provide exceptional hunting. I personally do not like to go on a bad duck hunt and I really don’t like taking people on a poor hunt. While we can’t guarantee success, we do everything possible to put the odds in our favor.
